November 16th, 2018 marks 3 years doing standup.
Whew. I’ve almost haven’t done anything this well, for this long. College still stands at 4 years and my ex still holds 5. I sucked at both of these things by the way. If we go back to Summer 2014, I had just graduated college with a degree in Computer School (I love saying that. It’s one of the best moments in the KOC). I was wide eyed and bushy tailed and filled with hope that I would definitely get a secure job out of college. Anyway, I wasn’t even getting interviews. Once, in a blue moon, when I did get interviews, I’d fail them. Really bad. I feel as though I can make people laugh because I’m vulnerable on stage and I don’t care about poking fun at my flaws. That comes natural to me. Interviews don’t allow you to do this. Oh yeah and I don’t like coding for hours without human connection. These events set the framework of my comedy writing. I came up with a motto that if something makes me cry, I can turn around and make people laugh about it. I know that people go through some of the same things that I go through (if not worse) and making them laugh about it makes me feel warm inside. There’s a reason for everything blah blah blah. Moving into Atlanta was one of the best decisions I ever made. I'm closer to my family and I really enjoy this comedy scene. I can’t wait to keep working in it in the future. <3

This week, Ranjit Daniel Tripathi filmed everyone's set at Star Bar. I needed a good video to send to festivals and clubs so I was happy for this opportunity. Because of this, I decided to do my core jokes. I would describe my core jokes as jokes that I know work well and I am the most comfortable performing. Performing older jokes made it possible for me to focus on my physicality and facial expressions to get a laugh rather than just the words. When I perform newer jokes they are not committed to my memory yet so I have to focus on the words more. Overall, this was a good set and I am excited to start submitting this video to festivals.

Last Thursday, I performed at Super Hungry Super Funny show (IG: @superhungrysuperfunny) at Crazy Atlanta hosted by my good friend Ernestine (IG: @ernest_energy). This show had a great turn out despite the weather. The crowd was really into the show and very engaged. It was a delight to perform at.
We had a great turn out because Ernestine took the time to guerrilla market the show by passing out flyers to people at other shows and on the street. This is a tactic that still works and I wish more comedians (myself included) were dedicated enough to utilize it. If I start a show, I definitely want to use this method. I like to give a special thanks to Ernestine for having me on the show and everyone who came out to laugh with us in the rain. The next Super Hungry Super Funny show is September 4th, 2018 (Super Hungry Super Funny takes place every other Thursday at Crazy Atlanta). Get your tickets for the next Super Hungry Super Funny : https://tinyurl.com/ybdyc5an This set is my ode to SZA and Kendrick Lamar's song, Doves in the Wind. In preparation for my headlining set, I am trying to do sets where I have one overarching topic. This week was my vagina (just like the amazing song). Usually, I would talk about two or three subjects in an eight to nine minute set. I am trying to learn how to talk about one thing for longer and still remain funny. Recently, I have been trying to work on my cleaner material, so it was fun to take a break from that for a moment. This set went well and I was happy. I tried new stuff that worked that I will definitely include in my later sets. I think school will be the next over arching subject I do.
PS, yes I wrote my set on a bar napkin. Like a true professional. At the end of last month, I did Once A Month Comedy show in Chattanooga at the Palace Theater. This show was awesome! This was my second time performing at the Palace Theater. It's a beautiful art venue and brought out a comedy audience both times I performed. I want to give a special thanks to Natasha Ferrier and Grace Holtz for having me. They were high energy, fun and kept the crowd hot all night. I will definitely come back to this show again even if it's just to watch! #OnceAMonthComedy :D
Here's a link to ticket to their next show on July 28th, 2018 at 8 pm at the Palace Theater (These tickets sell out!) : https://chattpalace.myshopify.com/products/once-a-month-comedy I'm the newest regular at Star Bar for the next 6 months along with the very funny Powell Mansfield and Kyle Gillis. I'm excited because I'll get to perform about 24 sets consecutively in front of the best audiences in Atlanta! I just finished week 5 of my residency. This was the most nervous I've been before a set all during my residency.
My approach coming into this long stretch of comedy was to do a joke purge. I want to perform almost every joke I've ever written for the first weeks then refine those jokes that didn't get the laugh I wanted in the next few weeks. I have been doing around 7 to 8 mins each Monday. To be honest I am coming the end of this joke purge and will have to start refining soon. I am now getting into my topical material. I love topical material so much, but unless an audience is emotionally invested in said topic it is hard for this material to stand the test of time. I was worried that I would be able to do my Superbowl jokes that I love to troll Atlanta audiences with because it was too topical, but they still landed. That lost was just that bad. Lol. On week 3, I performed concepts I have thought of during my first few months in comedy. It was interesting to see that those jokes still stood the test of time. These two sets stood out to me so far can't wait to share more. Star Bar is one of my favorite places to perform comedy at and I like to thank Rodney for the opportunity. I'll be giving updates on this residency periodically. For now, enjoy I picture of me and my sister, Lyn-Z's butt on the Star Bar stage. :D I am starting a podcast very soon with my good buddies Tommy and Neiko. I will drop the episodes biweekly on here. We will interview rappers, singers, graphic artists and others about their creative processes, who they want to reach with their art and their shows. We will also cover their successes and failures with trying to reach these audiences and comedic rambles by us about the world as well (of course).
I have been listening to podcasts for a while now. It is a great feeling to have an idea finally get off the ground. I feel like this vision will help talented artists get their work out their and merge with our comedy audience. Click below to listen to our first episode: Comedy and graphic art goes hand in hand. It is a necessity to push and promote shows. I recently found a super talented artist on Instagram. Her name is Chirissu. She was very nice, humble, and fast with her work.
I fell in love with with her chibi drawings of Pokemon and the Teen Titans and asked her to do some of me on stage. I will use these for upcoming promo and my logo. You can see the images she drew up for me below! I finally got off work and was able to catch two weekend headliners at Laughing Skull! This weekend I was able to see Mark Norman and Mia Jackson. I also got to see some great Atlanta favorites, Conrad Bromberek and Olivia Cathcart.
It was a good for me to see headliners perform. It was good for me to see how people that actually get paid to perform comedy approach it lol. I opened up for Mia back in December so of course it was a delight to see her new material. Mark Norman came on after her and did about an hour. He broke down so many huge topics in so many different ways. His bits about political correctness were different from anything I heard. I appreciate when comedians look at a topic in a way I never thought. I am definitely going to catch more shows in future in a new segment I like to call, Weekend Shows! :D |
