This week and last, I visited the open mic comedy mic at Lumiere lounge. This is a great open mic in a beautiful room. They have guest host every week. Last week, the host did not do much time in between and ran the mic very smoothly. It is one of the few mics that give you 6-7 mins. This is one of the mics I'm using to prepare for the competition. It's about 40 mins outside the perimeter but it's worth it! :)

This past weekend was the third and final preliminary round of the Charleston Comedy competition. This marks my first comedy competition. It was great being back in the Holy City and seeing my friends. It also cool to see how people's material changes in a competition setting. It was interesting to actually put a value on my jokes. Theatre 99 has one of the best comedy audience's in South Carolina. It was very well ran show as well. Special thanks to everyone who voted for me! My round of the semifinals will be November 19th. I can't wait! :D The Wondermic at the WonderRoot is a great open mic. It went away for a while, but it's back! And I'm glad. This mic is like a secret meeting of comedians coming together to practice how they're gonna crush their upcoming shows (in a basement of course). It is a pure work out room so bring new material. Hosted by Clark Franzman who will literally sits behind the crowd and calls out when he hears comedians re-telling jokes. He also threatens to throw things at you. It's great. Alot of rooms would like you to kill using material you know works. I think sometimes this makes comedians forget to try out new things. Any scene can benefit from tough approach. Wonder Mic is every Wednesday. Sign up at 9:30, show at 10:00. 30, 3 min spots.
In Erika's post I noted three people whose interactions with me are so energetic they are on the verge of volatile. Sam is one of them (one more left - Yannicka Pemberton you're next) ! Just to give you an idea of how high energy we are, the managers at our job would not put any other employee to work with us. We had to work in room with just us.
One of the best thing about our relationship is how far we take jokes. We add a hundred tags to one premise. We'll go off for 20 minutes on one joke. I also love how we talk about the plight of women. For example, the struggle of having big boobs lol. Two of my favorite recurring jokes we tell is the passive aggressive woman that everyone knows and how we know we're the complete worst. There's never a dull moment when we're together. You were the inspiration behind one of my best closing jokes - you and Beyoncé of course. You're very funny and a great friend! Love and miss you. I'll be back in Charleston soon. You already know this because we talked about it. Yesterday lol <3 Too Funny Tuesdays is an open mic every other Tuesday (the next show will be November 8th, 2016) held at The Factory Bar + Grille. It is hosted by the very charismatic and hilarious Vanessa Fraction (Insta: @vanessafraction). She plays off every comedian and engages the crowd. It is also one of the few rooms in the city where you can work out 7 to 10 minutes at a time. The super funny Mario Tory (Insta: @mariotory) was the featured comedian this week. He can be seen on Kevin Hart's Hart of the City.
The comedy open mic at Relapse theater has quickly become one of my favorites in the city. It is hosted by Joe Gallois.
Atlanta is treating me pretty well. This week I got to see Kanye MUTHER EFFIN West! I have been listening to Kanye religiously since I was in the 7th grade so this meant alot to me. I debated back and forth on buying a ticket because I'm poor (lol). But Lyn-Z made me and I'm glad I did. Thanks Lyn-Z! It was super fun. He did all the hits from every single album (Gold Digger, Runaway, Ultralight Beam etc, etc). During the show he takes a rant break. I listened particularly to this rant because in it he talked about fear. He stated that that's is how people will control you. One of the most amazing things he said during the show was "I don't like good ideas, I like the most fucked up ones". He is so fearless. I took to this. Sometimes when I write jokes I tend to shy away from the punchlines that could be seen as "fucked up". I am learning that there is a reason I came up with this idea and I should see it through. This is one of the best shows I've been apart of. I had a chance to go to the show once before performing in it. I saw Caleb Synan and Mike E Winfield play this room that week. I have to admit that was a little intimidating watching them work. It was a high energy and funny show. It was intimidating but also made me super excited to perform!
On my week the energy was just as high and I appreciated it. I love this picture from that night. The audience was so present, and this picture sums it up. I can tell they had a high comedy IQ. It was very welcoming. Special thanks to Ant Driver, David Perdue, and Olive Lynch for giving me some time in this amazing room. Hope to be back soon! : ) And Bernard Henry Manning for these amazing pics! I recently had my first showcase in Georgia at Utopia Bar and Grille in Duluth. It was alot of fun. I met some amazing comedians there. Special thanks to Vinnie Paul for giving me some time and a cool tank top as well. :) He was a great host and I look forward to doing one of his shows in the future. #VinniePaulComedy
I moved to Atlanta! I love Charleston so much. Especially the comedy scene. However, it is great seeing a new scene and new venues. I'm excited to see how my material will work here. Can't wait to start doing some posts on shows here! I am also closer to my sister and my nephew here. I missed them! You all will start seeing alot of them. |
