"When a tornado meets a volcano."
I quote that line for two reasons: You love Eminem and it describes you and me to the t. Erika, I met you the summer of last year and you're already one my closest friends. There's only about two other people (Yannicka Pemberton and Sam Marshall - coming soon) in this world that when we're together the energy is volatile. You are one of those people. So much so, one of the managers at our job banned us from working in the same wait station. I swear we speak in bits. One of our first conversations was a skit on "that one passive aggressive lady" in every party. We literally laughed for hours that shift. I knew we would be good friends from then on. You inspire my comedy and I'm glad we're homiez, fam. P.S. Happy Birthday! We gonna turn the F up in dis piece. P.P.S (is that how that works?) It's also funny that you got a fatty and you hate it. El oh elz. P.P.P.S It was also super easy to find pictures of you because you always hack my phone. -_-

I love music. Here's me murdering a song I like.
My 24th birthday was yesterday #KobeYear. One of my favorite podcasts, Brilliant Idiots Live, held a show that very day! It was at USC and only open to students, however. I graduated from the College of Charleston in 2014 (Shhh!!). When I like something I like I go in! So I drove to Columbia and borrowed an ID from a friend. Her ID didn't scan (karma) but I told them I was a December grad so they let me in (birthday luck). :) Shoutouts to USC and their horrible security. I got to ask Andrew Schulz about comedy and money. I asked him how he went from doing open mics to paid gigs. Charlamagne immediately interjected and told me to be happy "bagging the weed". For those that don't know, that was a reference to the hood classic, Belly, starring DMX and Nas. In said scene, DMX tells children that were mad about just bagging weed to be happy where they are now. It was a very hood way of saying, "enjoy the process". Him and Charlamagne tha God gave very great advice on loving your art. "When you love what you do, money will follow". Another thing they talked about was the idea of a big fish in a small pond. Charlamagne said that "you're not a big fish in a small pond if you don't know how to swim yet". I took this as you may think your town is small and you can't do anything from here. But you need to conquer small battles, before the war or you'll lose. Charlamagne also made me go on stage and perform standup. For those that have ever performed comedy, this is the worst thing ever. I had performed that Tuesday at Joe Pasta which I should not have mentioned. Andrew said that the crowd felt bad for me until I said that. The crowd actually liked my joke but Charlamagne and Andrew were not feeling it. All is not lost. It was an honor to be dissed by them in Joan-Rivers-hates-my-gown type way. I still know that set killed on Tuesday (it really did!). I also learned the art of under selling. After that, they let me hold the mic for rest the #AskAnIdiot portion of the show (I have a new found respect for Paige and Wax, that is a hard job and a workout). Another honor. Did I mention when I like something, I go in! I made an OG spray paint shirt of all their sayings which they loved: Got one person to believe in me. That's all it takes! haha
There was a video here of a set I did at Joe Pasta on December 22, 2015. However, since then, I have changed the jokes in said video (made them better) so I deleted the post. lol comedians *rolls eye emoji*
This is an ironic title for this post. The creation of this blog marks my separation from the community that uses that phrase. I graduated college in May 2014. For the past year and a half I have been applying to jobs every day to no avail. I am going to try things a little different this year. To commemorate this change I made an origami crown out of rejection emails I have received for the past year.
I do standup. I will use this blog to post some of my sets and other funny pictures and videos. I like you guys, you’re going places and I want to make you laugh at those said places. Ultimately, I want to make the world a happier place. :) |
