My 24th birthday was yesterday #KobeYear. One of my favorite podcasts, Brilliant Idiots Live, held a show that very day! It was at USC and only open to students, however. I graduated from the College of Charleston in 2014 (Shhh!!). When I like something I like I go in! So I drove to Columbia and borrowed an ID from a friend. Her ID didn't scan (karma) but I told them I was a December grad so they let me in (birthday luck). :) Shoutouts to USC and their horrible security. I got to ask Andrew Schulz about comedy and money. I asked him how he went from doing open mics to paid gigs. Charlamagne immediately interjected and told me to be happy "bagging the weed". For those that don't know, that was a reference to the hood classic, Belly, starring DMX and Nas. In said scene, DMX tells children that were mad about just bagging weed to be happy where they are now. It was a very hood way of saying, "enjoy the process". Him and Charlamagne tha God gave very great advice on loving your art. "When you love what you do, money will follow". Another thing they talked about was the idea of a big fish in a small pond. Charlamagne said that "you're not a big fish in a small pond if you don't know how to swim yet". I took this as you may think your town is small and you can't do anything from here. But you need to conquer small battles, before the war or you'll lose. Charlamagne also made me go on stage and perform standup. For those that have ever performed comedy, this is the worst thing ever. I had performed that Tuesday at Joe Pasta which I should not have mentioned. Andrew said that the crowd felt bad for me until I said that. The crowd actually liked my joke but Charlamagne and Andrew were not feeling it. All is not lost. It was an honor to be dissed by them in Joan-Rivers-hates-my-gown type way. I still know that set killed on Tuesday (it really did!). I also learned the art of under selling. After that, they let me hold the mic for rest the #AskAnIdiot portion of the show (I have a new found respect for Paige and Wax, that is a hard job and a workout). Another honor. Did I mention when I like something, I go in! I made an OG spray paint shirt of all their sayings which they loved: Got one person to believe in me. That's all it takes! haha
